The Power of Intrinsic Capacity: Predicting Health Trajectories and Mortality in the Elderly
Our health and abilities can change as we age, and this research explores how a concept called "intrinsic capacity" (IC) can predict these changes in older adults. IC is a measure of an individual's physical and mental capacities, including cognition, psychology, locomotion, sensory capacity, and vitality. The study focused on a group of older adults in China and used a tool called the ICOPE method to measure their IC.
The researchers found that individuals with higher IC were more capable in their daily activities. However, those who experienced a decline in IC over time also saw a faster decline in their daily functioning. More importantly, individuals with one or more impaired IC scores were at a higher risk of death. This suggests that assessing IC could help identify older adults who are at high risk of adverse outcomes, allowing for early interventions.
